Welcome Home, Chargers

The cornfields in Hillsdale County are growing tall.   The ramen section in Kroger is emptying out. The treadmills in the sports complex are filling up. Hillsdale SAB is blowing up its social media accounts with updates. You know what that means — It’s a fresh, new year on campus. Chargers old and new are flocking into dorms, Greek houses, and off-campus cribs, and we could not be more excited.

Everyone knows that Hillsdale runs on the pursuit of truth. SAB’s goal this year? To give everyone the means for #pursuingfun on the side.

No matter what fun means to you, it usually calls for being surrounded by the right people. That’s what Welcome Week is all about: It’s a time to get connected and reconnected. A time for old friends to come together, new friendships to take form, clubs to be joined, and school spirit to light up the campus.

Here’s a synopsis of what you can expect this week:

WELCOME PARTY: Monday, August 29 @ 8:30pm – 12am

#tbt to the rainiest CHP of all time this past spring. So rainy that we had to cancel a few of the attractions. The wait is over – get pumped for the balancing balls you’ve probably seen on the show Wipeout and the iconic mechanical bull.  Two student bands – The Professors and Deaf Davey & the Wine Boxes – along with special guest, The Vegabonds, will be taking the stage for live performances.

Dancing not your thing?  No worries, there will be plenty of activities to keep you busy around the tent.  You might find yourself in a life-sized game of jenga or water pong, snapping pics at a photo booth designed for social media, or simply enjoying all of the top-notch food.  Put that ramen away for now.

THE SOURCE: Tuesday, August 30 @ 10am – 1pm

Looking to get more involved on campus? Freshmen, this is your chance to peruse all of the clubs & organizations that our campus has to offer, along with the local businesses that make Hillsdale the sweet small town that it is. Meet club leaders at booths underneath the tent on the quad, sign up for email lists, and pick up a bunch of free merch along the way! Most importantly, make sure you grab an Otter’s Army t-shirt to wear for the first home football game! Returning students, look for new & growing clubs – this is your chance to try whatever’s been in the back of your mind for the last year or so.

Read up on our 100+ clubs, organizations, and honoraries here. Don’t see one that charges you up? Partner with the Student Federation to start a group that better suits your interests.

KICKOFF COOKOUT: Friday, September 2 @ 6-9pm

You’ve made it through your first three days of classes, signed up for ballroom dance club, and made some cool friends. Now what? Come to Hayden Park for free food, volleyball, yard games, music, and plenty of Charger spirit.  SAB will be teaming up with the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) to grill out and show some support for our athletes.

The sand volleyball courts at Hayden Park are always home to some fierce competition.  Better yet, the courts are now equipped with great lighting for night games.

FIRST HOME FOOTBALL GAME & TAILGATE: Saturday, September 3 @ 7pm

Watch our chargers show Indianapolis what we’re all about. Come early and stop by the SAB tailgate for hot dogs, face paint, and more! Forgot to pick up your Otter’s Army shirt at The Source? No worries, we’ll have extra.

Ever wonder what ‘Otter’s Army’ really means?  The term comes from a shortened version of head football coach Keith Otterbein’s name.

….. and that’s just the first week. Looking for more? Check back on this blog often and follow SAB on social media for updates!
